The Glenmorangie Bacalta is the latest release in the Private Edition Range from Glenmorangie. Yesterday I was able to attend the launch party in London thanks to Dave Alcock @WhiskyRepublic & The Glenmorangie Team whilst being joined on the night by Dr Bill Lumsden (Director of Distilling & Whisky Creation at The Glenmorangie) & Brendan McCarron (Head of Maturing Whisky Stocks at The Glenmorangie) on a live chat from Edinburgh. The event was held in the Punch Room, which was warmly decorated in dimmed lighting with a sunburst glow, matching the Bacalta name which is Scot Gaelic for ‘Baked’.
So what is the Glenmorangie Bacalta you may ask? Well the Glenmorangie Bacalta is the 8th release in the Private Edition range and the first Glenmorangie which has been finished in Malmsey Madeira casks that had been Sun baked. Malmsey Madeira is considered to be one of the prized Madeira wines and a rare food finish. The Bacalta is bottled at 46% abv and non-chill filtered, as Dr Bill Lumsden stated in the live chat “to leave all these lovely acidy ester in there, which aswell contributes to the flavours also gives this lovely texture.” Now it was time to taste the whisky that we all came for. But first we had a flight before us containing from left to right the Glenmorangie Original, Lasanta 12yr and leading up to the Bacalta.
My Tasting Notes:
Nose: On the nose straight away I’m greeted with the powerful abv followed by ripe sun soaked oranges, candied citrus peel, then warming spice with cinnamon, maple syrup and honeyed cinnamon bark. Very juicy in character.
Palate: Moving onto the Palate rich in texture, a combination of grapefruit and orange zest, a short burst in mouth warming spice, baked fruit such as apricots and spiced oranges covered in thick Honey. Just on the end more sweeter notes develop like sugar syrup on bread.
Finish: A long finish with a oaky dryness, the citrus tang stays consistent but now as a more juicy sweeter note of sundried sultanas, fudge, and sweet bread right on the end.

If you have a chance to get a hold of one of the Glenmorangie Bacalta be sure to enjoy and savour this exquisite dram, my advice would be buy two, yes TWO because one you can enjoy and the other keep aside because this whisky will gain value as its part of the Private Edition Range and it will be limited. To conclude the evening I’d like to say thank you to Glenmorangie & Dave Alcock @WhiskyRepublic for allowing me to join in on this launch. It was a fantastic experience also meeting Dave Worthington@WhiskyDiscovery and Kat Presley @WhiskyDiscovKat I’m really looking forward to all the future releases Glenmorangie holds instore.
